Gary’s obsession with notable light fittings – No. 11

Walking up to my brother Glenn’s house in Buxton, I stopped dead outside Number 157. A single Victorian lantern glowing amber above a small tree wrapped in modest multicolour lights — nothing showy, yet completely charming. It felt like winter had paused for a moment just to admire it. A perfect, accidental festive picture.

Glenn’s front garden at Number 157 has always had this understated charm to it, but this time it caught me off guard. There, beside the path, stood his faithful Victorian lantern — proper cast metal, reassuringly weighty, and giving off that warm, golden light only traditional fittings seem able to manage. It’s the sort of lantern that holds its own in any weather, quietly doing the same honest job year after year.

Just next to it he’d tucked a small Christmas tree, nothing extravagant, simply threaded with those classic multicoloured fairy lights. The sort with rich reds, greens and blues — nostalgic without trying to be. Powered from a discreet outdoor socket, they flickered gently among the branches, adding just enough colour to lift the whole scene without overwhelming it.

The combination was genuinely lovely. The lantern brought the depth and warmth; the tree added the sparkle. No overthinking, no elaborate design — just a natural meeting of heritage lighting and seasonal cheer. And it’s funny how often those unplanned little moments end up being the most atmospheric. Standing there in the Buxton dusk, I caught myself smiling at how perfectly balanced it all looked.

For today’s garden lighting, the lesson is simple: a good lantern sets the tone for everything around it. Add a subtle power point for seasonal lights and suddenly you’ve got a space that can evolve through the year without fuss. Number 157 shows that beautifully — a small, thoughtful setup that becomes a moment worth stopping for every December.
