Penthouse Roof Terrace

This project involved the design of a discreet smart lighting scheme for a private roof garden in King's Cross. The terrace already had a strong architectural setting, with raised planters, seating areas, glass balustrading and open views, so the lighting needed to feel calm, precise and integrated rather than decorative or excessive.

Garden Lighting Solutions by Eagle & Spear developed a low-voltage scheme using concealed planter cabling, a dedicated transformer and Zigbee-based smart control. The design combined post lights, wall lights and flexible spotlights to add warmth, depth and usability across the roof garden after dark.

The brief:

Creating atmosphere without overpowering the space

The client wanted the roof terrace to feel more inviting in the evening, while still respecting the clean lines of the space. The lighting needed to improve visibility and atmosphere without creating glare, clutter or a harsh urban lighting effect.

The raised planters were central to the design. They provided the natural route for discreet cable distribution and allowed the lighting to be integrated around planting, edges and seating zones with minimal visual impact.

There was also a practical requirement for simple control. The system needed to be easy to operate from a mobile device, with the ability to schedule, dim and adjust scenes as the terrace was used in different ways.

The design approach: a warm and inviting space after dark

A layered lighting scheme built around the planters

The design centred around a layered low-voltage lighting approach, carefully using light only where needed to reveal planting, define structure and improve usability.

Raised planters became the backbone of the scheme, allowing discreet cable routing and subtle integration of lighting throughout the terrace. Variable-height post lights were introduced to create rhythm and vertical interest, while flexible spotlights provided gentle illumination through planting and focal areas.

Compact wall fittings were selected to introduce controlled downward light across planter faces, circulation routes and terrace edges, helping the roof garden feel calm, warm and balanced after dark.

High level architectural lighting required careful access, positioning and commissioning.

The Installation

Concealed infrastructure with future flexibility

The installation strategy focused on maintaining the refined appearance of the terrace. A dedicated transformer and smart control hub were positioned close to the available power supply, with low-voltage cabling discreetly routed through and between raised planters to minimise visual impact.

Before installation, fitting positions, cable routes and transformer locations would be carefully marked out to ensure the final arrangement worked naturally with the planting, furniture layout and architectural features of the terrace.

The system was also designed with future flexibility in mind, allowing additional fittings or zones to be incorporated later without disturbing the wider installation.

Smart Control & Lighting Palette

Warm-white lighting with intuitive app control

A restrained warm-white lighting palette was chosen to create a sophisticated evening atmosphere. Quartz and Juno spotlights provide precise feature lighting for shrubs and focal planting, while Xible flexible plant lamps add softer directional illumination from within the planters.

Erba post lights introduce architectural rhythm and gentle vertical definition, while compact Tiga wall lights provide subtle downward illumination to edges and planter structures.

To make the terrace effortless to use, a Zigbee-based smart control platform was included, enabling app control, dimming, scheduling and scene setting for entertaining, relaxation or practical evening use.

The Installation Confidence

Designed as a complete exterior lighting system

Prior to final connection, the existing electrical installation would be inspected and tested to confirm supply suitability and overall system compatibility.

Rather than simply installing fittings, the scheme was designed as a complete exterior lighting system, considering transformer capacity, cable sizing, weatherproof connections, smart controls and future maintenance access from the outset.

Final dusk commissioning would allow beam angles, brightness levels and focal points to be refined after dark, ensuring the finished lighting feels balanced, natural and visually coherent.

The Result

A calm, refined roof terrace after dark

This scheme demonstrates how a roof garden can be transformed without over-lighting the space. By using raised planters as the hidden framework for the installation, the lighting remains discreet while delivering a meaningful visual and practical improvement.

The finished terrace feels warmer, more inviting and significantly more usable in the evening. Planting gains depth, seating and barbecue areas become more welcoming, and architectural edges are softly defined rather than brightly exposed.

The result is a refined, future-ready roof garden lighting scheme — combining smart technology, careful installation and understated design to complement modern urban outdoor living.

Technical confidence behind the finish

Careful planning behind a refined roof terrace scheme

This roof garden lighting scheme required careful consideration of access, cable routing, fitting placement, smart controls, weather protection and future flexibility. Every fitting was selected for the specific role it would play within the terrace, not simply because it produced light.

Concealed low-voltage cabling through raised planters, dedicated transformer positioning, exterior-rated fittings and discreet smart control integration all sit behind the finished appearance. The objective was to ensure the terrace remained visually calm and uncluttered while still delivering a technically robust installation suitable for long-term outdoor use.

Final evening commissioning is an essential part of the process. Roof garden lighting cannot be fully designed from a plan or judged in daylight alone. Beam direction, brightness, glare and balance are carefully refined at dusk, when planting, seating areas, architectural edges and shadows reveal how the terrace truly feels after dark.

This final stage ensures the lighting works naturally with the way the space is used — creating an atmosphere that feels warm, comfortable and intentionally understated rather than over lit or visually intrusive.

Ongoing maintenance and estate partnership

The best lighting schemes need protecting.

Ongoing maintenance, adjustments and seasonal refinements ensure the estate lighting continues performing beautifully, protecting the hotel’s evening presentation long-term.

For this roof garden project, the long-term opportunity extends beyond installation alone. The lighting scheme has been designed to support an ongoing relationship covering maintenance, adjustments, future additions and the continued presentation of the terrace after dark.

Roof gardens naturally evolve over time. Planting matures, furniture layouts change, entertaining needs shift and the way the space is used develops. Spotlights may occasionally require adjustment, smart control settings may benefit from refinement, and seasonal planting can create opportunities to rebalance focal points and atmosphere.

A maintained lighting system helps ensure the terrace continues to feel considered and visually balanced rather than slowly becoming uneven or overgrown by its surroundings. Periodic inspections, cleaning, beam-angle adjustments and system checks can help preserve both performance and appearance.

The result is a roof garden that continues to look its best year after year — not simply on the first evening after installation, but throughout the changing seasons and evolving life of the space.
