Gary’s obsession with notable light fittings – Special Edition
It’s fair to say my lifelong obsession with lighting reached new heights this week.
I was deeply honoured to be recognised by the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers — one of the City of London’s great livery companies, dedicated to those of us who spend our lives chasing, shaping, and perfecting the art of light.
Standing in that magnificent hall, surrounded by fellow Lightmongers in their robes and regalia, I felt both proud and humbled. The craftsmanship, the history, the glow of polished brass and candlelight — it was, quite literally, a room built for someone who has been hopelessly obsessed with light fittings since boyhood.
For me, lighting has never been just about illumination. It’s about creating mood and meaning; a quiet joy found in the way light catches wood panelling or softens a shadow. The Lightmongers celebrate exactly that — the art, the science, and the fellowship of those who bring light into people’s lives.
To be recognised by them is both a personal milestone and a reminder of why I do what I do. From grand chandeliers to humble garden bollards, every fitting tells a story — and I’m still utterly, joyfully obsessed with them all.
