Lighting a Patio or Terrace Garden

Many gardens centre around a patio or terrace. It is often the space where people gather, dine outdoors, or simply sit with a glass of wine on a warm evening.

Yet when darkness arrives these spaces frequently become unusable unless harsh security lighting is switched on.

Thoughtful patio lighting avoids glare and instead builds atmosphere around the seating area. The aim is not brightness but comfort — a space that feels welcoming and relaxed well into the evening.

Features often worth illuminating around patios include:

• Trees or larger shrubs close to the terrace

• Garden walls or boundary planting

• Steps or level changes leading away from the patio

• Pergolas or overhead structures

• Decorative pots and specimen planting

In many gardens the most effective lighting does not come directly from the patio itself. Instead, light is placed slightly further away, drawing the eye outward into the garden. A softly lit tree beyond the terrace creates depth, while low lighting along steps or paths gently defines the space.

This layered approach creates a patio that feels connected to the wider garden rather than isolated within it.

With carefully designed lighting, a patio becomes a space that feels just as inviting after sunset as it does during the day.
