From Victorian lanterns to sculptural modern pendants, statement fittings reveal the character of their surroundings. I’ve started collecting photographs of those that stop me in my tracks — each one a reminder that great lighting is about emotion as much as illumination.

Some people collect paintings or pottery — I collect light fittings.

The kind you spot unexpectedly, glowing against old brickwork or tucked above a narrow doorway, quietly transforming a street corner into something special.

This particular piece, a proud Victorian lantern mounted on a pub wall, caught my eye for its craftsmanship. The black iron bracket curves with confidence, while the aged glass gives the light a gentle amber warmth. It’s not just functional — it’s architectural punctuation, defining the façade around it.

That’s what a statement fitting does: it becomes part of the story. In homes and gardens, the same principle applies. One distinctive lantern or sculptural feature light can lift an entire scheme, giving it presence and personality. It might echo the property’s era, complement the planting style, or simply express the homeowner’s taste.

When designing a garden lighting plan, I always suggest choosing at least one fitting that speaks for you — the rest of the scheme can harmonise quietly around it.

At Garden Lighting Solutions, we help homeowners across London and the South East discover those defining pieces, balancing beauty with performance. From design and supply to full installation, we bring statement lighting to life.
