At Garden Lighting Solutions, we prioritise a personal and stress-free experience. We understand the need for the installation process to be as unobtrusive as possible.


Programme
Stage 1: Drawings & Quotation
After your survey, Haitham prepares the detailed plans and drawings for your project. He sets out the proposed lighting design, fitting positions, and cable routes. You’ll also receive a clear, itemised quotation that matches the design exactly. Haitham talks you through the proposal and coordinates all appointments
Why it matters: You get to see your garden lighting scheme before a single spade is lifted—with a clear price, no hidden extras.
Stage 2: Marking Out the Garden
Cable routes, fitting locations, and supply points are marked clearly on-site. We confirm positions with you for bollards, spikes, and feature lights. Tom, our gardener/groundworker, prepares access points carefully to minimise disruption.
Why it matters: Every detail is agreed before work begins.

Stage 3a — Long-distance cabling, trenching and specialist crossings (Easthampstead Park)
For the Easthampsted Park installation we expect extended cable runs, a number of driveway crossings and an island crossing across tarmac. To ensure a durable, fully-compliant installation with minimal disruption, we carry out all long-run works to specialist standards using industry-leading plant and accredited subcontractors.
What we do — step-by-step:
3a.1. Pre-work surveys & utility clearance

Full underground services sweep before any excavation using CAT & Genny and, where required, GPR scans.

We produce a site-specific cable run plan layered onto the lighting drawings, showing all drive crossings and any areas requiring specialist access.

Where the run crosses estate roads, drives or highways we design a traffic / access management plan in coordination with the estate manager.
3a. 2. Trencher works for long runs

We use a ride-on trencher sized to the run and soil type to create clean, consistent trenches (depths set to site requirements — typically deeper for mains or SWA runs to avoid accidental damage).

Trenches are machine-excavated where safe to do so; hand-digging is used near existing paved features, borders, or utilities to avoid damage.

Excavated material is segregated and stored for reinstatement; topsoil is kept separate from subsoil to aid neat reinstatement of turf and borders.
3.a 3. SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable specification & mechanical protection

Where 240V mains must run externally or under drive surfaces we install SWA armoured cable sized for the load and run length with appropriate derating allowances. (Cable type, cores and size are specified in the quotation and chosen to meet load, distance and future-proofing requirements.)

Mains runs receive mechanical protection: ducting/sleeving under drives, protective conduit in exposed areas, and concrete-formed troughs or draw pits where required.

All required earthing and bonding is installed, with equipotential bonding to nearby structures if necessary.
3.a 4. Specialist moling / directional boring for drive crossings

For sensitive or trafficked drive crossings we use an accredited moling / directional-boring subcontractor to pull duct or cable under the surface without open-cut excavation. This prevents long closures and preserves original surfacing.

Where mole or directional-bore is selected, we install continuous HDPE ducting (sleeve) with draw-ropes to allow future cable replacement without additional excavation.

For long or multiple bores we include a contingency and inspection pits at each end for jointing and future access.
3.a 5. Tarmac cutting & island crossing

Where the run crosses a tarmac central island or carriageway we engage a tarmac cutter to make controlled, precision cuts. Cuts are executed to the required width and depth for the ducting/system in a single operation.

If surface reinstatement requires hot-lay tarmac repair, we coordinate reinstatement immediately after backfill to avoid prolonged site disruption. Where needed, we provide temporary plates or temporary metal covers to keep the route safe and accessible until final reinstatement.

All cutting and reinstatement is completed to highway/estate standards and signed off with the estate manager.
3a 6. Jointing pits, draw-in ducts and warning systems

Cable joints are housed in dedicated, easily accessed joint pits or inspection chambers sited where shown on the drawings. These are installed to the appropriate IP/mechanical spec for the location.

We lay warning tape above all electrical conduits to inform future excavators; all critical corridors also receive continuous HDPE ducting with draw wires for future upgrades.
3a 7. Health & Safety, traffic management and environmental protection

We produce a site-specific RAMS and traffic-management plan for any road/drive crossings (temporary signage, cones/barriers, banksmen where required).

All plant operations are supervised, banksmen used for vehicle movement, and dust/noise mitigations are applied when working near residences.

We protect tree roots and planted areas using approved techniques; in sensitive zones we use hand excavation only and liaise with arboricultural advisors if necessary.
3a 8. Testing, commissioning & professional sign-off

After installation, all runs are continuity-tested and insulation-resistance tested to BS 7671 standards. SWA earth continuity and loop impedance are measured and recorded.

A dusk commissioning ensures that voltage drop, beam aiming and control sequencing are tuned to the design intent. Full test results, certificates and as-built drawings are supplied in the Operation Manual.

Why it matters: For installations at Easthampstead Park the correct specification and execution of long runs, drive crossings and island cuts prevents future failures, makes maintenance straightforward, and keeps the estate looking pristine. Our approach minimises disruption, preserves surfacing, and gives you a future-proof, serviceable lighting network.
Stage 4: Electrical Installation
Gary personally oversees and executes all electrical works on the Easthampstead Park project. Every element is installed in accordance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and Part P of the Building Regulations, with full inspection, testing, and certification provided on completion. His involvement guarantees the highest standards of safety, workmanship, and long-term reliability.
Enabling Supplies & Protection
Power for the system is taken safely from the property’s consumer unit or distribution board. Ahead of installation, Gary checks RCD/RCBO protection, load capacity, and available spare ways to ensure the new circuits are correctly rated and fully compliant. Where required, a dedicated lighting circuit is installed to prevent nuisance tripping and maintain clean, stable performance across long cable runs.
Cabling & Infrastructure

12V Systems: H07RN-F flexible rubber cable sized precisely for load, voltage drop, and run length, ensuring consistent brightness across the garden.

240V Systems: Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cable for all underground mains runs to provide mechanical protection and long-term durability.
-
Surface Mains Routes: Hi-Tuf cabling installed neatly and securely, clipped and terminated to British Standards for longevity.
-
Cable routes follow the pre-agreed plans and include appropriate depth, bedding, warning tape, and mechanical protection where required for the estate environment.
Connections & Jointing
All outdoor joints use IP68-rated or gel-filled watertight connectors for maximum reliability in damp soil conditions. Jointing points are kept accessible in small inspection pits or protective housings where maintenance may be required in future.
Outbuildings, Garages & Ancillary Buildings
If lighting or power is needed in outbuildings, Gary installs dedicated SWA supplies in ducts or trenches, terminating into a small consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection. Socket and lighting circuits are separated and fully tested to ensure safe operation and future expandability.
System Integration & Safety
Smart controllers, timers, photocells, and switching points are installed neatly and tested as part of the commissioning process. Earthing, bonding, and circuit separation are all verified and documented. Voltage drop calculations, protective device coordination, and cable sizing are all carried out before work begins, ensuring the system performs exactly as designed — even across long-distance runs typical of a site like Easthampstead Park.
Why it matters. Every circuit, connector, and cable is installed and tested by Gary himself. This guarantees full compliance, exceptional workmanship, and a safe, future-proof installation built to withstand the environmental and operational demands of a large estate.
Stage 5: Reinstatement & Finishing
Tom reinstates turf, borders, paving, and gravel carefully, cables are hidden and no trace left., the garden is tidied and left exactly as it was.
Why it matters: A professional finish that doesn’t disturb your garden.
Stage 6: Fitting of Lights
Haitham ensures fittings match the agreed plan and quotation. Tom assists with mounting where groundwork is involved. Gary checks electrical safety and positioning during fitting.
Why it matters: Lights are fitted securely, tested, and aimed perfectly.
Stage 7: Commissioning & Testing
Gary ensures all circuits are fully tested for safety and performance. We fine-tune at dusk, adjusting brightness and angles. You receive full certification for your records.
Why it matters: Peace of mind that your system is safe, certified, and future-proof.
Stage 8: Supply, Guarantees & Operation Manual
You receive an Operation Manual including:
• Plans and drawings by Haitham.
• Fitting schedule and makes/models.
• Instructions for controls and smart systems.
• Certificates and guarantees signed off by Gary- all workmanship and fittings are covered by our guarantee.
Why it matters: You know exactly what’s been installed and how to use it.
Stage 9: Maintenance & Care
Year 1: A bespoke yearly maintenance visit is included. Our maintenance team check fittings, clean lenses, and re-set electrics. Year 2 onwards: You can extend the plan annually for complete peace of mind, coordinated by Haitham. Click for info on our MAINTENANCE PLAN.
