Some garden features take on an entirely different character once the sun goes down. During the day they form part of the landscape, but at night they can become the visual centrepiece of the garden.

Thoughtful lighting allows these features to be revealed in ways that are both dramatic and elegant.

Among the most rewarding elements to illuminate are:

• Mature trees with interesting branch structure

• Sculptural planting or ornamental grasses

• Garden steps and pathways

• Water features or reflective surfaces

• Architectural elements such as walls, arches or pergolas

A single mature tree, carefully lit from the base, can transform the atmosphere of the entire garden. The branches and leaves catch the light while shadows add depth and movement.

Similarly, gently lighting a pathway not only improves safety but also adds rhythm and structure to the garden at night.

In a typical garden the most successful schemes do not attempt to light everything. Instead they select a handful of features and allow the surrounding darkness to frame them.

This balance between light and shadow is what gives a well-designed garden lighting scheme its quiet magic.
